EasyReader Premium for Educators Course

8. Reflections and other features to explore

Overview

Welcome to lesson 8 of 8 in the EasyReader Premium for Educators Course.

In this lesson you will reflect upon the points discussed in earlier lessons and explore three other noteworthy features. You will also learn about free resources available to you that can help you learn more about EasyReader App and the EasyReader Premium service.

Lesson Objectives

After studying this lesson, you will be able to:

  • Correctly state the key EasyReader Premium features you have reviewed during this course.
  • Correctly state three other features in the EasyReader App that may benefit your students.
  • Correctly state at least three other resources where you can go to learn more about the EasyReader App and the EasyReader Premium service.

This lesson should take no more than twenty minutes to complete.

The five step plan

You can make accessible curriculum material available to your students by following five steps:

  1. Register with your library and, if required, setup accounts for eligible students. Remember, libraries include Bookshare USA, Bookshare Ireland, CELA Canada, and RNIB Bookshare UK. You can view a full list of supported libraries by visiting Partner libraries available in Dolphin Products.
  2. Setup student logins using the EasyReader Premium Portal. Remember, the Education Plan enables you to distribute EasyReader Premium to all students who may benefit from using the App.
  3. Download, install, and setup EasyReader App on the devices used by your students. Remember, you can install EasyReader App on smartphones, tablets, PCs, and Mac computers.
  4. Share curriculum resources. Remember students can download books from their library, import files from sources such as email attachments, and access files from Google Classroom and Microsoft Education.
  5. Tailor accommodations based on insights on App usage. Remember, the EasyReader Premium Portal provides insights into student engagement, enabling you to identify potential issues, and open a dialogue with students where engagement is low.

Accomplishments during this course

Your accomplishments during this course included:

  • Downloading your first book.
  • Opening your first book.
  • Navigating to the opening chapter of your first book.
  • Playing your first book.
  • Changing the appearance of your book.
  • Changing the audio output when reading a book.
  • Adding, removing, and managing bookmarks and study notes.
  • Recognising the key elements that are synchronised with the EasyReader Premium service.

Other features to explore

There are three more features we would like to briefly highlight before bringing this course to a close.

1. Pronunciation dictionaries

If you listen to textbooks using a synthetic voice and you find a word wrongly pronounced, for example, "Jekyll" may not be pronounced as "Jekhl", then you can resolve this by adding a correction into the pronunciation list. You can do this directly through the "Audio settings" option or by doing the following:

  1. Right click, or tap, hold, and then release your finger on the mispronounced word. A content menu opens.
  2. Select "Add correction". A screen will open with the mispronounced word in the "Original word" field.
  3. Type how you want the voice to read your word in the "Should sound like" field. You may need to experiment with your spelling to improve the pronunciation.
  4. Once done, save and return to your book.

You can create as many entries as you require. You may also want to create more than one Pronunciation List if you need to resolve errors in different TTS voices, or the subject you are reading contains abbreviations to be read in full at other times.

You manage your Pronunciation Lists in "Audio settings". You can create new lists, edit existing lists, and delete lists.

With EasyReader Premium, your Pronunciation Lists are synchronised across your devices. In addition, if you are using EasyReader App on the Windows platform, then you can share your Pronunciation Lists with others on the Windows platform using the Import and Export options available in the EasyReader App. This can provide a quick solution for a group of students who are reading the same text.

2. Import documents

Although, already partly covered in the Accessing PDF files lesson, it is worth reiterating that students can import files they receive from external sources, for example, documents from teachers or notes from other students. The file types supported include DAISY, EPUB, Microsoft Word documents, HTML, Plain Text, and PDF files.

To import a file using the Share option (supported by Apple, Amazon, and Android devices):

  1. Open the App containing the file, for example, "Files", "Dropbox", or "OneDrive".
  2. Select the file and choose "Share" or comparable option within the app.
  3. Select "EasyReader".

To import a file using the EasyReader App Import option (Supported by Amazon, Android, and Windows devices):

  1. From the "My Books" screen, select the "Import" button.
  2. Select the file.
  3. Select the "Open" button.

To import a file using the Drag method (supported by Apple iPad and Mac devices):

  1. Open the App containing the file, for example, "Files", "Dropbox", or "OneDrive".
  2. Drag the file to the My Books screen.

The import process copies, converts and adds the file to the "My Books" screen. When the import process is complete, the file opens in the Reader screen.

With EasyReader Premium, you can import an unlimited number of files, and it includes support for PDF files. However, it is important to note that files you import are not synchronised across devices.

3. Save and read clipboard text

Students can save and read text they copy to the Clipboard in EasyReader App. They may find this helpful when reading passages of text from other sources such as webpages or when only a section of a document requires reading.

To save and read a Clipboard entry:

  1. Copy the text to the clipboard.
  2. Open the EasyReader App.
  3. From the "Side menu", select "My Clipboard Texts".
  4. Select the "Add" button. EasyReader App will ask you to give the entry a title, offering a segment of the current Clipboard text as a suggestion. You should give the entrya meaningful name for the ease of reference.
  5. Enter a title and choose the "OK" button.
  6. Select your entry to view the text in the Reader screen.

On the Windows platform, you can also press CONTROL + V when the "My Books" screen or the "My Clipboard Texts" screen has focus to add your copied text into EasyReader Premium.

With EasyReader Premium, all clipboard entries you create on one device are synchronised across your other devices, helping to ensure your studies uninterrupted.

Help and support

The following resources are available to you if you require assistance using EasyReader Premium and the Education Plan:
