5. Managing Braille verbosity
Reading time: 3 minutes.
What are Verbosity Schemes?
Verbosity Schemes determine how much information you are told about controls like buttons, check boxes, radio buttons, menu items and their state as you navigate Windows.
SuperNova and Dolphin ScreenReader include four default Braille Verbosity Schemes and four Speech Verbosity Schemes, and you can configure these schemes independently.
What Scheme should I choose?
The factors governing your decision include:
- Your preference towards using magnification, speech, or Braille as your primary means to access your computer.
- Your familiarity with the apps you are using.
- The number of cells on your Braille display.
There is a mantra often stated by people using Braille: "Speech for speed and Braille for accuracy".
Selecting a Braille Verbosity Scheme
To select a Braille Verbosity Scheme, do the following:
- Open the SuperNova or Dolphin ScreenReader Control Panel.
- From the "Braille" menu, open the "Verbosity Level" submenu (ALT + B, V).
- Select a Scheme.
You can also change Verbosity Scheme using a keyboard command.
Command | Desktop - Default NumPad Set | Laptop - Universal Set |
Change Braille Verbosity Scheme | LEFT SHIFT + CAPS LOCK + EQUALS | LEFT CONTROL + CAPS LOCK + V |
Change Speech Verbosity Scheme | CAPS LOCK + EQUALS | CAPS LOCK + V |
Braille abbreviations for objects
SuperNova and Dolphin ScreenReader abbreviates many of the controls you encounter when navigating Windows. This is done to reduce the number of cells required to show such information, which is especially helpful on small displays.
Abbreviations you may encounter include:
- Balloon = bln
- Button = btn
- Button bar = btnbar
- Cell = cel
- Checkbox = chkbx
- Edit area = edit
- Graphic = gr
- Group box = grp
- Heading = hdg
- Link = lnk
- List box = lbx
- List view = lv
- Page tab = page
- Tab control = tabctl
- Table = tbl
- Workspace = wkspc
Tip: You can review and edit abbreviations for all types of controls in the "Braille Advanced Options" dialog box (ALT + B, A).
