3. Selecting Braille output
Reading time: 3 minutes.
Setting Braille translation tables
SuperNova and Dolphin ScreenReader supports two forms of Braille output: Computer Braille and Literary Braille.
Computer Braille provides a strict one character per cell output irrespective of the character. It is of most use in situations where you need to identify every character, for example, when writing and reviewing computer code.
The term Literary Braille covers both grade 1 and grade 2 Braille tables and is most commonly used when reading text. Literary Braille uncontracted grade 1 output is the default setting in SuperNova and Dolphin ScreenReader.
You can change your Braille Translation Tables by doing the following:
- Open the SuperNova or Dolphin ScreenReader Control Panel.
- Open the "Braille" menu and select "General Preferences" (ALT + B, P). The "General Preferences" dialog box opens showing the "translation tables" page with focus on the "Unicode to Braille Conversion" list.
- Select your Tables from the available options.
- Choose a Computer Braille table from the "Unicode to Braille Conversion" list. The table you choose is also used for Computer Braille input when you are using Computer Braille.
- Choose a Literary Braille table from the "Unicode to Literary Braille Conversion" list. Literary tables include Unified English (UEB) Grade 1 and Grade 2 tables.
- If your display supports Braille input, choose the table you wish to use from the "Literary Braille Input" list.
- When done, select the "OK" button.
On confirming your selection, your Braille display output will change to match your preferences.
How to toggle between Computer Braille and Literary Braille output
You can toggle between Computer Braille and Literary Braille by pressing LEFT CONTROL + LEFT SHIFT + 8, or by making the following change in the SuperNova and Dolphin ScreenReader Control Panel:
- Open the SuperNova or Dolphin ScreenReader Control Panel.
- Open the "Braille" menu, open the "Characters" submenu, and select "Literary" (ALT + B, C, L). If Literary Braille is enabled, then this will switch output to Computer Braille and vice versa.
