SuperNova for Educators Course

Overview

Welcome to the SuperNova for Educators Course.

If you are a teacher, teaching assistant or provide technical support to students with a visual impairment that are using SuperNova and Dolphin ScreenReader in an educational environment, then this course is for you.

This short course is presented through a series of bite-size lessons made up of video and text instruction. The course aims to give you the confidence to know you have a clear understanding of the magnification and screen reading options available with SuperNova and Dolphin ScreenReader.

You do not need to install and run SuperNova or Dolphin ScreenReader to complete this course. However, if you do wish to use the program as you work through the course, then we recommend you download and install SuperNova Magnifier & ScreenReader. The SuperNova Magnifier & Screen Reader edition contains all the features discussed in this course.

Course Objectives

After studying this course, you will be able to:

  • Correctly name the four magnification and screen reader programs available from Dolphin and state their install methods and supported operating systems.
  • Correctly describe the primary features available with each of the four magnification and screen reader programs and detail the level of visual impairment to which each program is suited.
  • Correctly name two major features that can benefit students in a classroom environment and accurately explain the setup process.
  • Correctly name five free resources available to you that you can use to further your knowledge of Dolphin’s magnification and screen reader programs.

Introduction

This short course contains twelve bite-size lessons and ends with a free of charge quiz, which is marked. In each lesson, there are three sample questions, which you should try to answer as you proceed through the course. Each lesson should take no more than 20 minutes to complete.

Certification

On successful completion of this course, you will be able to request a Dolphin Certificate and a Certification Badge, which you can display in your signature and on your website. The Certificate and Badge confirms you have completed this course and passed the end of course quiz, providing you with a well-earned record of your accomplishment.

The Certificate and Badge are free of charge, but we do ask you to complete a short course survey.

You will have the opportunity to complete the survey when you have passed the assessment. The Certificate and Badge will be presented to you in an email and will be sent to the contact details you provide.

Keyboard Commands

Lessons in this course reference keyboard commands. These keyboard commands refer to the UK English keyboard layout. Keys for other layouts may not correspond exactly to the documented keys.

Where keyboard commands are stated, a plus sign (+) means that you need to press multiple keys at the same time. For example, ALT + F means you must hold down the ALT key and while it is held down, press the F key before releasing both keys. When a comma sign (,) appears in a keyboard command it means you press the keys in sequence. For example, ALT, F means you tap the ALT key and then tap the F key.

It is important to have a basic understanding of your keyboard layout and how to use the keyboard to work and navigate in Windows to complete this course. If this is unfamiliar to you then please consider spending time learning your keyboard layout before embarking on this course.

Hotkey Sets

The lessons in this course reference two different hotkeys. The hotkeys come from the two most popular hotkey sets used with SuperNova and Dolphin ScreenReader.

These are:

  • The Desktop Default NumPad Set.
This hotkey set is based upon a standard Windows plugin keyboard and makes use of both the numeric keypad and the main keyboard for its hotkey assignments. This is the most popular hotkey set. You will find the keyboard assignments for this hotkey set described in the videos and throughout the text of each lesson.
  • The Laptop Universal Set.
This hotkey set is based upon a standard inbuilt laptop keyboard layout without a numeric keypad and makes use of only the main keyboard layout for its hotkey assignments. You can find the keyboard assignments for this alternative hotkey set described within the text of each lesson.

If the instructions in the lesson state only one hotkey, then this means the keyboard assignment is the same in both hotkey sets.

You can review your current assignment in the SuperNova and Dolphin ScreenReader "Keyboard Settings" dialog box.

To do this:

  1. Open the SuperNova or Dolphin ScreenReader Control Panel.
  2. Open the "General" menu, open the "Keyboard Settings" submenu and select "Keyboard" (ALT + G, K, K).
