  • SuperNova Magnifier & ScreenReader.

Dolphin Whiteboard Assistant

The Dolphin Whiteboard Assistant works in conjunction with SuperNova to enable a student to connect to and view a secondary computer screen such as a teacher’s smartboard or interactive whiteboard on their own computer screen.

This enables students to use SuperNova to view, magnify, and follow what their teacher is presenting in an accessible way that does not require them to be positioned at the front of the class or utilising a digital camera.

The Dolphin Whiteboard Assistant provides a secure virtual network connection and gives the teacher complete control over who can access the screen and for how long with just a few clicks. Students view the screen passively. They cannot interact or influence the presentation.

The Dolphin Whiteboard Assistant is available for the Windows operating system. You can download the Dolphin Whiteboard Assistant by visiting https://yourdolphin.com/whiteboard-assistant. If you are using an alternative operating system, please contact Dolphin Product Support for assistance.

Teachers - How to use Dolphin Whiteboard Assistant

After the installation of the Whiteboard Assistant onto your (the teacher’s) computer, you can open the Dolphin Whiteboard Assistant by clicking the desktop shortcut or by selecting the Start menu item.

You will be asked to set a password the first time you open the Dolphin Whiteboard Assistant. Your students require this password to connect to your computer.

You can choose to generate a random password or set your own password. The password is case sensitive and must contain eight characters.

After you have set a password, you will be taken to the start screen for the Dolphin Whiteboard Assistant.

The start screen contains two sections:

  • SuperNova Connect and View Settings: These are the details the students who are using SuperNova require to connect to your shared screen.
  • Sharing: This prvides information about whether your screen is currently being shared and how many students are viewing your shared screen.

Also available on the start screen is a Settings button. This is positioned at the top right of the screen. This includes options to change your password, and also to choose the colours that indicate a Window is being shared. To share your screen with the students who are using SuperNova in your classroom:

  1. At the start of the lesson ensure your students have the required information to connect to your computer. Note that students do not require the Dolphin Whiteboard Assistant installed on their computer.
  2. Select the "Start Sharing" button. Open the Dolphin Whiteboard Assistant.
  3. Select your sharing preferences. You can choose to share your entire screen or only share a specific Window from your screen (e.g. a slideshow window).

  4. Select your stop sharing preferences. You can choose to manually stop sharing or choose to stop after a specific time has elapsed.

  5. Select "OK" to start sharing.

Once you start sharing your screen, the "Sharing" section of the Dolphin Whiteboard Assistant will display a message to show that the screen is now being shared.

If you chose to share a specific Window, a coloured border will be shown around the edge of the Windows being shared. You can customize the border colour by selecting the settings button at the top right of the Whiteboard Assistant.

The Whiteboard Assistant also shows:

  • The number of students that are actively viewing your screen through SuperNova in a coloured circle.
  • The name of the Window being shared (if you chose to share a Window).
  • The amount of time left before sharing will automatically stop (if you chose to set a timer).

To stop sharing your screen, do one of the following:

  • Select the "Stop Sharing" button in the Dolphin Whiteboard Assistant.
  • Close the Dolphin Whiteboard Assistant.
  • If you chose to share a specific window, close the shared window.
  • If you set a timer, the screen sharing will automatically stop when the allotted time has passed.

Once the sharing session has ended, the students connected to your computer will no longer be able to view your shared screen.

Students - How to add a teacher's whiteboard to SuperNova

Before you (the student) can connect to a whiteboard, you need to add the whiteboard to your list of devices in SuperNova. You only need to add the device once, then it will be available to select from your list each time you require access to the teacher’s whiteboard.

  3. In the "Connect and View Settings" dialog box, select the "Whiteboard" tab and choose the "Add" button.
  4. Add your teacher's whiteboard settings into the available fields. You will have to enter:
    • Profile name: You should enter meaningful name such as the teacher's name or classroom number to help you easily select the connection in the future.
    • Machine name: Enter the teacher's computer name as stated in the Dolphin Whiteboard Assistant. This is a unique name for the teacher's computer.
    • Port: The Port should be set to 5900 unless you have been instructed to change the value by your IT support team.
    • Password: Enter the password created by your teacher. The password is case sensitive.

Students - How to view a teacher's whiteboard

Once the teacher's whiteboard has been added as a SuperNova device, students can connect to and view the teacher's whiteboard by doing the following:

  1. Ensure the teacher is sharing their screen.
  2. Open the SuperNova Control Panel.
  3. From the "Visual" tab, select the "Connect and View" dropdown, then select "Choose Whiteboard". A list of whiteboards is displayed.

  5. From the "Visual" tab, select the "whiteboard" button to begin viewing the teacher's shared screen. Alternatively, open the "Visual" menu and select "Whiteboard" (ALT + V, W).

You can also turn of and off the viewing of the teacher's whiteboard by pressing ALT + NUMPAD ENTER or, if you are using the Laptop Universal Hotkey Set, by pressing LEFT SHIFT + CAPS LOCK + 0.

Students - Options available when viewing the teacher's whiteboard

When you enable the viewing of the teacher’s whiteboard, a portion of your screen shows the feed from the whiteboard. As described in the previous lesson, you can change the size and position of the window, jump between your whiteboard window and your desktop with CAPS LOCK + MIDDLE MOUSE BUTTON and use the toolbar options to control the appearance of the image.

You can magnify, pan, rotate, change the colours and capture the image using the Toolbar options. You can also choose to track the movement of the teacher’s pointer by selecting the "Track presenter" option in the Toolbar.

When you choose to track the presenter, the image will automatically scroll to follow the teacher's pointer movement around the screen, stopping only temporarily if you move your mouse pointer.

You may wish to turn off this feature if you want to examine your teacher’s slide at your own pace.

Tip: You can also choose to view the movement of the teacher’s mouse pointer on your screen by selecting the "Show Mouse" checkbox. This option is available in the SuperNova whiteboard device settings. --- Before ending this lesson, it is also worth giving the "Lock image" option a repeat mention. In relation to a whiteboard presentation, the "Lock image" option enables you to pause the current slide, enabling you to examine the slide in more detail, at your own pace, without the possibility of the slide changing. However, be aware that when you do unfreeze the screen, the image will jump forward to the current output on the teacher’s screen.

Summary

This lesson introduced you to the Dolphin Whiteboard Assistant. It explained how a teacher can use this program to share their screen and how a student can then use SuperNova to connect to and view the teacher’s shared screen.

You also learnt that the same familiar options designed to make viewing the screen more comfortable, as described in the previous lesson on accessing content from a digital camera, are also available when viewing the feed from a whiteboard.

If you would like to learn more about the benefits students can gain from using SuperNova in a classroom, visit the SuperNova Education Kit pages on the Dolphin website.

In the next lesson you will be discovering the purpose, benefits and role the EasyReader App can play in an educational environment.
