Copying Text with the Dolphin Cursor
Introduction
Sometimes you can come across little bits of information on a web page that you want to copy to another program. For example, you may want to copy the address of a business or the telephone number of a local restaurant to your address book.
Below you will learn how to copy text from a webpage using the Dolphin Cursor.
Reading time: 3 minutes approx.
Copying text using the Dolphin Cursor Selection Mode
You can use the Dolphin Cursor to copy snippets of information from a web page.
To do this:
- Press SHIFT + Arrow Keys to make your selection. Please note that no visual highlighting appears on the screen.
- Press CONTROL + C. SuperNova and Dolphin ScreenReader announces "Copy" and the text is copied to the Clipboard.
- Go to the place you want to insert the selected text.
- Press CONTROL + V to paste the content from the Clipboard.
The copy process copies the text as plain text without formatting and respects the line breaks on the webpage, meaning this method works best for small passages of text.
Tip: As an alternative to using SHIFT plus your chosen keystrokes to make a selection, you can also use a Temporary Place Marker. You will learn more about this method in an upcoming section.
Dolphin Cursor Selection Mode keyboard commands
In the example above, you used SHIFT + Arrow Keys to make the selection with the Dolphin Cursor. You can also use a variety of other familiar keyboard commands to make your selection.
These include:
- LEFT CONTROL + LEFT SHIFT + LEFT ARROW to select the previous word with the Dolphin Cursor.
- LEFT CONTROL + LEFT SHIFT + RIGHT ARROW to select the next word with the Dolphin Cursor.
- LEFT CONTROL + LEFT SHIFT + UP ARROW to select the previous block of text with the Dolphin Cursor.
- LEFT CONTROL + LEFT SHIFT + DOWN ARROW to select the next block of text with the Dolphin Cursor.
- LEFT SHIFT + HOME to select from the current Dolphin Cursor position to the start of the line.
- LEFT SHIFT + END to select from the current Dolphin Cursor position to the end of the line.
- CONTROL + A to select all the text on the webpage with the Dolphin Cursor.
For a full list of keyboard commands, please refer to the product manual.
Copying formatted text using the Dolphin Cursor drag and drop method
If you need to copy and paste text from a web page and retain the format of the text then you need to adopt a different approach.
To do this:
- Position the Dolphin Cursor on the first character of the data to be selected. Note that the first character is different to the first line. If you are on the first line you should move the Dolphin Cursor right so that the first letter is the focus.
- Press RIGHT CONTROL + HOME or, if you are using the Laptop Universal Hotkey Set, press LEFT CONTROL + CAPS LOCK + 8. SuperNova and Dolphin ScreenReader announces "Drag".
- Move the Dolphin Cursor to the last character in the block of data to be selected. Again, it is important that you move the Dolphin Cursor to the last character and not simply the last line.
- Press RIGHT CONTROL + END or, if you are using the Laptop Universal Hotkey Set, press LEFT CONTROL + CAPS LOCK + 7. SuperNova and Dolphin ScreenReader announces "Drop" and the text on the webpage is highlighted.
- Press LEFT CONTROL + 7 or, if you are using the Laptop Universal Hotkey Set, press CAPS LOCK + 3. SuperNova and Dolphin ScreenReader announces "Allow through", enabling you to pass the copy command directly to the web browser.
- Press CONTROL + C. SuperNova and Dolphin ScreenReader announces "Copied text to Clipboard".
- Go to the place you want to insert the selected text.
- Press CONTROL + V to paste the content from the Clipboard.
In essence, this process simulates the positioning of a mouse pointer at the start of your selection and performs a mouse pointer drag to the end of the selection. These steps enable you to retain the formatting of the text and respect the paragraph line breaks.
Summary
In this section you learnt two methods to copy text from a webpage. One method uses simple familiar keystrokes to capture pieces of text while the other enables you to perform a richer copy and paste procedure, ensuring text formatting and paragraph line breaks are respected.
