Overview
Welcome to lesson 10 of 15 in the Accessible Reading for Educators Course. In this lesson you will learn about the study tools available with EasyReader App.
Lesson Objectives
After studying this lesson, you will be able to:
-
Describe the key benefits study tools can provide in a learning environment.
-
Name four study tools available in EasyReader App and the benefits they offer as a learning aid.
- Describe the steps a student follows to use the study tools in EasyReader App.
This lesson should take no more than 10 minutes to complete.
Benefits of using study tools
"I cannot teach anybody anything; I can only make them think." – Socrates.
The benefits of study tools to improve comprehension has been long understood. Quizzes, flashcards, etc. give students practical ways to reinforce what they have already studied in lessons, helping them to retain key facts in the given subject.
For other students, gaining an overview of the text can prove invaluable in their comprehension of a subject. It can help them to distil complex material into clear, memorable ideas, making it easier to revisit and retain the core message of a topic.
When learners can reshape information into a more digestible form that reflects their needs, it turns previously passive reading into stronger understanding.
Benefits of a good tutor
"Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn." - Benjamin Franklin
A good tutor, who uses guided questions rather than direct answers, helps students to construct knowledge independently, actively engages learning, creates critical thinking, and builds long-term retention by allowing the student to discover concepts on their own.
Exploring text with AI
"What we want is to see the child in pursuit of knowledge, and not knowledge in pursuit of the child." - George Bernard Shaw
EasyReader embraces these key ways to learn. Through Explore tools,
students can use AI to enhance their learning.
Students can explore text using study tools that include:
• Summary. Enables students to summarise text. Students can choose to receive a brief, standard, or detailed summary depending on their requirements.
• Tutor. Enables students to ask questions about the text. The tutor does not answer the question directly, but guides the student to the passage of text that contains the answer.
• Quiz. Enables students to assess their knowledge on the current text.
• Flashcards. Enables students to assess their knowledge on the key facts, figures, dates, and similar information that is found within the text.
All the Explore tools harness the power of AI to analyse and generate information based on the text. Dolphin has taken all care to ensure students cannot use AI within the EasyReader App for other purposes. For further information, see AI You Can Trust.
Accessing the EasyReader Explore tools
To begin exploring your text:
1. Open a text-based book.
2. Navigate to the section of the book you want to explore. You can choose to study the text in the current heading, paragraph, or you can select a section of text for study.
3. Select the "Explore" button. If you are using Windows, you can also open the "Tools" menu and select "Explore".
4. Choose the text you want to explore. The options include Automatic, Heading, Paragraph, or Selected text. Automatic is the default value and, in most cases, will send the text within the current heading. This will only differ if the book is poorly formatted, for example, where the current heading contains many pages such as the whole book.
5. Choose the study tool you would like to use.
The information is sent to the AI for analysis, and the resulting output is generated and presented to the student. Remember, in terms of tutoring, a guided approach is offered that directs the student to the key passages of text that contain the answer. The Tutor does not provide a direct answer.
Summary
Explore tools harness the power of AI to help students better comprehend text and support their independent learning. These tools are designed to guide, prompt, and support student learning. Tools include text summarisation, simplification, tutoring, and the use of study aids such as quizzes and flashcards.
