Overview
Welcome to lesson 10 of 13 in the Accessible Reading for Educators Course. In this lesson you will learn how students can open documents on Google Classroom and Microsoft Education through the EasyReader App.
You will also discover how students can import files from other sources into the App, enabling them to read using their preferred accessible reading preferences.

Lesson Objectives
After studying this lesson, you will be able to:
- Identify the file formats and platform-specific upload types that are supported by the EasyReader App.
- List the steps students follow to log in to Google Classroom or Microsoft Education to access files provided by teachers.
- Explain how students import files from Google Drive, OneDrive, email, or the Clipboard into EasyReader App.
- Evaluate which method of accessing or importing content would best support different students' needs based on file format, accessibility, and device.
This lesson should take no more than 10 minutes to complete.
Watch - Opening files from Google Classroom and Microsoft Education
Accessing files saved by teachers on the Google Classroom and Microsoft Education platform.
The EasyReader Education Plan enables students to browse, open, and read supported files uploaded by their teachers onto the Google Classroom and Microsoft Education platforms.
For students to access their teacher’s files, they must:
- Open the EasyReader App.
- From the "Side menu", choose "Google Classroom" or "Microsoft Education". If these options are not listed, students should select the "Manage libraries" option and enable the platform they want to access.
- If students are unsure of their credentials, they should request assistance from their teacher.
After signing in, students can browse, select, and open the files that are available to them. The list of files is filtered to show only file formats supported by the EasyReader App.
The files students choose to open are imported and added to the "My Books" screen.
Notes:
- When using Google Classroom, EasyReader App will only display files teachers add as "Material". Other entries will not be listed.
- When using Microsoft Education, EasyReader App will only display files teachers add as an "Assignment". Other entries will not be listed.
Opening files from other sources
Students can import files from other sources including their personal Google Drive or Microsoft OneDrive folders, and files sent to them from apps such as those they receive as an email attachment.
Students can browse the files on their Google Drive or OneDrive Account in the same way they can browse files on Google Classroom and Microsoft Education. They simply need to select the drive from the library list, login, and then browse and open the files they want to read.
Students who receive files from other sources, for example, as an email attachment, can choose to share the file with EasyReader App. Students simply follow the usual steps to share a file on their smartphone or tablet and then choose "EasyReader" as the destination.
In all cases, the import process copies, converts, and adds the file to the "My Books" screen. Once imported, students can read these documents using their personal reading preferences.
Saving and reading text copied to the Clipboard
In addition to importing files, students can also copy and paste pieces of text from other sources, such as the web, and read it in EasyReader App with their personal reading preferences.
To do this, students:
- Copy the passage of text they want to save to the Clipboard.
- Switch to the EasyReader App and choose "My Clipboard Texts".
- Select the "Add" button and follow the onscreen instructions.
The student’s Clipboard entries are automatically saved and synchronised across their devices, helping them to continue their studies at home as well as at school.
Types of files students can open in EasyReader App
When students are seeking to import files from within the EasyReader App, the App filters the file list to show only supported file types. It is therefore important that teachers ensure the content they make available is in a format students can successfully import.
Students can import the following types of files:
- DAISY version 2 and 3 (.zip format).
- EPUB version 2 and 3.
- HTML
- Microsoft Word (.docx).
- Plain text.
- Accessible PDF.
Summary
In this lesson you learnt how students can login, browse, open, and view supported file types available on the Google Classroom and Microsoft Education platforms. You also discovered how they can import documents from other sources and the types of files students can import.
