Analytics on student reading
The Dolphin Education Portal, which was discussed earlier in this course, gives Teachers and Administrators the opportunity to sign up students to the EasyReader Education Plan.
Along with the ability to create and manage Accounts, Teachers and Administrators can also gain insights into the reading engagement of their students.
The analytics available include:
- List of all the Accessible Library books a student has downloaded.
- Last time the student opened a book.
- Current reading position in a book.
- Total time the student has opened the book.
- Total time the student has been actively reading the book (i.e. time the Play button has been pressed).
Insights offered by the analytics
From these analytics, Teachers and Administrators can gain insights into an individual student’s engagement with reading.
Teachers and Administrators can view how many library books a student has downloaded and actively read, and from this data gain an insight into a student’s engagement with the subject matter and the reading process.
When students aren't engaging with EasyReader, it often signals underlying implementation barriers. This gives administrators a chance to investigate why a student isn't using the tool. It could be due to issues with their library account, a teacher who isn't adequately trained to assign books, or some other technical problem. Identifying these issues allows administrators to address them and improve student access and utilization of EasyReader. Recognising positive student engagement is wonderful and can help to reinforce positive reading trends, but more importantly identifying students who are not engaged can bring about meaningful discussions to help highlight whether more accommodations are required.
Summary
In this lesson you learnt about the analytics available with an EasyReader Education Plan and how reviewing this data can help Teachers and Administrators better understand a student’s engagement with reading.
