Accessible Reading for Educators Course

13. Five Step Plan

Overview

In this, the concluding lesson of the Accessible reading for Educators Course, we will lay out a five-step plan that aims to make implementing accessible reading seamless within a school.

But, before you dive into the five key steps, we would like to thank you for your participation in this Course and that we hope you found the content helpful in directing you towards implementing your own accessible reading plan.

Lesson Objectives

After studying this lesson, you will be able to:

  • Describe the five-step process for implementing accessible curriculum materials using the EasyReader Education Plan.
  • Demonstrate how to set up student logins using the Dolphin Education Portal and assign reading materials through the EasyReader App.
  • Differentiate between the supported login methods and evaluate which method is most appropriate for different student needs.
  • Interpret student engagement insights from the Dolphin Education Portal to inform instructional decisions.

This lesson should take no more than 10 minutes to complete.

The five step plan

Schools can make accessible curriculum material available to their students by following a five-step plan:

Step 1: School registers with an Accessible Library and, if required, setup Accounts for eligible students.

Remember, Libraries include Bookshare USA, Bookshare Ireland, CELA Canada, and RNIB Bookshare UK. You can view a full list of supported libraries by visiting Partner libraries available in Dolphin Products.

Step 2: Setup student logins using the Dolphin Education Portal.

Remember, the Education Plan gives Teachers and Administrators the ability to setup logins for all students who may benefit from using EasyReader App. Teachers and Administrators can choose from three different login methods, enabling them to tailor the login process to meet their student needs.

Step 3: Students download, install, and login to the EasyReader App using the login method chosen by the Teacher or the Administrator.

Remember, students can install EasyReader App on smartphones, tablets, PCs, and Mac computers. The App is free, and students can use the App on all the supported devices they have access to, enabling them to work at school, on the move, and at home.

Also remember that an Education Plan gives Teachers and Administrators control over the student login process. Teachers and Administrators can decide to create individual student logins, use a QR Code, or add the school email domain to enable students to login to the Education Plan in a way that is appropriate to their needs.

Step 4: Teachers identify and share accessible curriculum resources with students.

Remember, students can download books from their library, import files from sources such as email attachments, and access files from Google Classroom and Microsoft One Drive.

Step 5: Tailor accommodations based on insights on App usage.

Remember, the Dolphin Education Portal provides insights into student engagement, enabling teachers to identify potential issues, and open a dialogue with students where engagement is low.

Summary

Following the five-step plan should help remove barriers to reading for young people with special educational needs and disabilities.

Teachers who implement the process as part of their daily preparation for lesson should find the wealth of resources available from Accessible Libraries alongside the seamless integration into the EasyReader App a winning combination.
