Downloading books from an Accessible Library
So far on this course, you have learnt about:
- Signing up your school and students to an Accessible Library.
- Creating student logins for the EasyReader Education Plan.
- Installing the EasyReader App and the login process for students.
Now let us explore how students can download books from Accessible Libraries.
To do this:
- From the "Side menu", select the library. If the library is not listed, select "Manage libraries" and choose the library from the available list.
- Enter the student library login credentials. Students will require their library login credentials the first time they access the library. Students should ensure they have this information at hand.
- Use the library’s facilities to search for and view a book’s properties. Students should ensure they choose the book in the teacher’s requested format. Ideally, teachers will have chosen and added the book to the student’s assignment or reading list folder.
- Select the "Download" button. Students can continue to browse and queue other books to download while the current book is downloading.
- Use the "Back" button to return to the "Side menu" and choose "My Books".
Tip: Book download times may vary considerably. This will depend on file size and Internet speed. Text-based books will download in seconds while audio-based books may take several minutes to complete.
The books students download appear in the "My Books" screen. This is the first screen that appears when the App opens. Students can return to the "My Books" screen at any time by selecting it from the Side menu.
When you choose to open a book, it opens in the Reader screen. You will learn more about the Reader screen in the next lesson.
Available book formats
When students search for a book, they may often find the book offered in different formats. These can be broadly categorised into text-based books, audio-based books, and synchronised text-and-audio-based books.
Type | Category | Description |
DAISY | All | Digital Accessible Information System (DAISY) are a popular book format offering text-based, audio-based, and text-and-audio-based options. |
EPUB | Text | Electronic publications (EPUB) are a popular open standard file format for digital books and publications. |
DOCX | Text | Microsoft Word (DOCX) is a popular text-based format that is supported by most text editors. |
Text | Portable Document Format (PDF) files from Accessible Libraries are accessible. PDFs from other sources may be inaccessible, for example, a file may contain images of printed pages rather than text. | |
MP3 | Audio | MPEG Audio Layer 3 (MP3) is a popular compressed audio format. |
BRF | Other | Braille Ready Format (BRF) are files you can use with refreshable Braille displays, Braille notetakers and Braille Embossers. |
Except for BRF files, EasyReader App supports all popular file formats available from Accessible Libraries. EasyReader App also supports other format types including Plain Text and HTML.
