Overview
Welcome to lesson 8 of 13 in the Accessible Reading for Educators Course. In this lesson you will learn more about how students navigate books within the Reader screen and how students can use bookmarks to aid them with their studies.
Lesson Objectives
After studying this lesson, you will be able to:
- Describe the navigation options available on the Reader screen.
- Demonstrate how bookmarks are added to a book and explain how a student can identify the presence of a bookmark.
- Explain how to add a text note to a bookmark and give an example why a student may find adding notes beneficial.
- State how students can export bookmarks and give an example why exporting bookmarks may aid in a student’s studies.
This lesson should take no more than 10 minutes to complete.
Navigation settings
As highlighted in the previous lesson, students can use controls on the Reader screen to skip back and forward through their book and expand the navigation controls available by disabling "Simple navigation layout".
Irrespective of layout preferences, students can navigate directly to a specific heading, page, or bookmark through the "Book navigation" button.
Students using a Windows or Mac computer can use keyboard commands to open the navigation option they require. Students can view a full list of keyboard commands in EasyReader Help.
Managing bookmarks on the Reader screen
Students can use bookmarks to mark important places in a book for easy reference in the future. Places may include favourite passages, quotes, and other points of interest for their studies.
Students can add bookmarks to text-based books, audio-based books, and text-and-audio-based books. Students can add as many bookmarks as they require, and their bookmarks and text notes are synchronised across their devices.
To add a bookmark, students need to tap the "Bookmark" button and, if they want to add a text note to the bookmark, they simply tap the "Bookmark" button again.
Tip: Students using a Windows computer can press B to insert a bookmark, and press B again to add a text note. Students using a Mac computer can press COMMAND + B to insert a bookmark, and press SHIFT + COMMAND + B to add a text note.
Edit, remove, and export bookmarks
As well as navigating to bookmarks through the "Book navigation" option, students can edit and remove bookmarks they have inserted into their book by using the appropriate button.
Students can also export their bookmarks. Students may find this useful when creating revision sheets for subjects or references for essays and reports. Elements students can export include the bookmark position, their text notes, the text at the bookmark position, and details about the book.
Students can begin the export process by going to "Navigation settings" and choosing the "Export" option. Alternatively, on a Windows computer, students can open the "Tools" menu and select "Export bookmarks".
Below is an example of the exported output:
Arthur Doyle. The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. Dover Publications, Incorporated. Bookshare. 9780486474915
Bookmark: 1 / 2
Position: 40%, p. 93
User note:
Here is my first example text note.
Text from book:
One night--it was in June, '89--there came a ring to my bell, about the hour when a man gives his first yawn, and glances at the clock. I sat up in my chair, and my wife laid her needlework down in her lap and made a little face of disappointment.
Bookmark: 2 / 2
Position: 40%, p. 93
User note:
Here is my second example text note
Text from book:
"You will excuse my calling so late," she began, and then, suddenly losing her self-control, she ran forward, threw her arms about my wife's neck, and sobbed upon her shoulder. "Oh! I'm in such trouble!" she cried; "I do so want a little help."
Summary
In this lesson you looked at the additional navigation options available from the Reader screen, and the application and management of bookmarks and their accompanying text notes.
